It was an intertwining nexus of fragility and endurance. Each year they bloomed, bearing their frail faces to the atmosphere. Those frail faces that at times were crested with diamonds, coagulated dew drops that perched tentatively on the curve of a lonesome tear.  Fragile in their pale hues, yet stitched together in a patchwork bloom, they released an infusion of beauty into a twine nest of rustic brown. When they danced, transient petals crested on upturned lips, blessing them with a flowery kiss of frail incense. Yes, they were fragile, but preciously captured in an acute moment of pure bliss.

I spent my days drifting between pools of dappled lighting, tentatively stepping between a mellifluous twilight and a stagnant, opaque darkness. I began to fuse, with arched pain, into my surroundings. It was an enforced union, my body raped and violated, my freedom squashed until it expired. I dared not dream, let alone encourage the word ‘____‘ to crawl through my mind. But one day I got bold. I’d seen that obscure orb float across the snatches of light blue for years. Yesterday I bent my neck and stuck out my head. It hurt. But I’d found the ‘space’…to grow.

If you only stopped, stooped down low and took a look. Took a real good look. You’d see their broken bodies, like snapped twigs – except they had a bend. They had become malleable to better mould themselves to the overbearing winds that shoved them apart creating miniature wind tunnels that whipped through their obscure communities. Too often they were trampled over, without any regard. But remember, we’re looking closer. Noticing the vibrancy of their colour. A rich green. Green of life. They were still alive, bursting with chlorophyll bloodstreams. If you just looked down, looked down real good, you would see.

From her window, if she left one ear on the sagging pillow, slightly raising her left shoulder, she could just about peep over the ledge before the squeal of the burnt tyres fled like a stamped out fire. Refracted and misdirected in the sweat lined window pane, the light appeared dis-coloured and vague in shape. She sighed, letting her head sink back again. It reminded her of the obscure vision that played in her brain, danced through the rain of pervasive thoughts that told her perhaps but in short, she would have to work, wait, before her great escape.

They knew they couldn’t sustain it. Yet the realization their life was finite, that they existed on a condensed amount of time, acted as an accelerant to their powerful ignition. Writhing and rising in a dramatic dance of freedom they contorted their wraith like bodies through the mesh prison that imposed itself on their furious dance for freedom. Desire licked their bodies whipping them into a frenzy as they switched partners, spun twirled soared, melting with the light, creating a burnished glow that singed the very air they leapt through. They only had a few minutes left, stretching for existence.

One of my favorite things about this job – tomcat – is getting to patrol parks. Stumbling across the odd couple getting at it, or the few youngsters dealing in the bad stuff are part of the JD, but mostly it’s just a paid late night amble. My partner gets quite jittery – bus -jumping at every car and whisper, crunching daisies and snail shells, but me, I just listen to the  gossip from the leaves in the trees. Feel the soft mud squelching beneath, it’s an obscure bliss…till he flips on his light switch and catches daffodils just about to kiss!

They looked cheerfully edible. The attractively strange adjective combination drifted ponderously through his mind as he gazed curiously up at the Lady. A tentative hand stretched slowly, hovering between the baby pink button-ties and the lemony-yellow. He wondered if they tasted like sherbets. The tantalizing colorfulness of her attire rigorously shook up the overbearingly bland urban backdrop that shrouded her. Saliva drooled from his toothless orifice as the rich material was coupled with the rich flavors that poured incessantly into the archaic street, permeating every nook and cranny. He just didn’t understand why she looked so very sad.
